The advantages I can think of for backward compatibility on the Series X are: FPS boost on some original and 360 titles, increased resolution on all original Xbox titles and some 360 titles (this also applies to the One X), Auto HDR on most titles, and faster loading times because of the SSD.

One S can go online. Xbox One's and Series consoles always download the entire game when playing backwards compatible games. The game disc is just for license validation and nothing is actually installed from the disc of OG/360 games on the newer consoles. And as I said, they explicitly tweeted that the Series S would run the "Xbox One S version" of backward compatible games (with some non-resolution-related upgrades). That means 1280x960 for OG Xbox games, and the original resolution for 360 games. There's no assumption there, that's literally what they said.
